  1. 1840-1926. French painter, a pioneer of
  2. Impressionism and a lifelong exponent of its
  3. ideals; his painting Impression, Sunrise 1872
  4. gave the movement its name. In the 1870s he
  5. began painting the same subjects at different
  6. times of day to explore the effects of light
  7. on colour and form; the Haystacks and Rouen
  8. Cathedral series followed in the 1890s, and
  9. from 1899 he painted a series of Water Lilies
  10. in the garden of his house at Giverny,
  11. Normandy (now a museum). Monet was born in
  12. Paris. In Le Havre in the 1850s he was
  13. encouraged to paint by Boudin, and met
  14. Jongkind, whose light and airy seascapes made
  15. a lasting impact. From 1862 in Paris he
  16. shared a studio with Renoir, Sisley, and
  17. others, and they showed their work together
  18. at the First Impressionist Exhibition 1874.
  19. Monet's work from the 1860s onwards
  20. concentrates on the evanescent effects of
  21. light and colour, and from the late 1860s he
  22. painted in the classic Impressionist manner,
  23. juxtaposing brushstrokes of colour to create
  24. an effect of dappled, glowing light. His
  25. first series showed the Gare St Lazare in
  26. Paris with its puffing steam engines. Views
  27. of the water garden in Giverny gradually
  28. developed into large, increasingly abstract
  29. colour compositions. Between 1900 and 1909 he
  30. produced a series of water-lily mural panels
  31. for the French state (the Orangerie, Paris).
